Three Things for Thursday

  • Enjoy the beauty and quirkiness of the 2018 Sculpture by the Sea entries. For the 22nd year, Sydney’s Bondi Beach becomes the site of a stunning art installation featuring artists from around the world.
  • Perspective, from Sylvia Earle in The World Is Blue: How Our Fate and the Ocean’s Are One :

“Even if you never have the chance to see or touch the ocean, the ocean touches you with every breath you take, every drop of water you drink, every bite you consume. Everyone, everywhere is inextricably connected to and utterly dependent upon the existence of the sea.”

  • In “The Amazing Art Museum Under the Sea,” go for a virtual swim in the waters surrounding Cancun, Isla Mujeres, and Punta Nizuc. The Museo Subacuático de Arte (MUSA) is a collection of sunken sculptures that provide a destination for tourists and thereby protect the natural coral reefs. According to Roberto Díaz Abraham, President, Founder, and art contributor of MUSA, “The most important part of MUSA is the purpose. The purpose is the art of conservation. . . . By placing beautiful, contemporary sculptures underwater, in places with nothing but stone and sand . . . then tourists will go to visit the museum instead of the natural reef.”
